Veteran IT firm BMC has acquired Model9, a provider of data management technologies for mainframes.

Founded in 2016, Model9 provides cloud storage for mainframe systems; it allows companies to write mainframe data directly to the cloud, providing an alternative to tape storage or virtual tape libraries. It also provides cloud or on-premise backup & recovery offerings for mainframes and tape data.

The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2023. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but BMC said Model9’s technology will enhance the acquiring company’s Automated Mainframe Intelligence (AMI) portfolio.

“Together BMC and Model9 support innovation by reimagining mainframe data management,” said John McKenny, senior vice president and general manager, intelligent Z optimization and transformation at BMC. “With mainframe cloud data management, organizations get all of the benefits of the cloud including flexibility, scalability, and price, while delivering the advantages of on-premises mainframe computing for large-scale, business-critical applications. Together, we will extend cloud benefits to our mainframe customers as they accelerate their journey to become an Autonomous Digital Enterprise.”

BMC said the acquisition will provide customers with the capability to store and share mainframe data across hybrid IT environments, including public and private clouds.

“We see the success our customers have as they modernize their mainframe by connecting it to the cloud,” added Gil Peleg, founder, and CEO at Model9. “The combination of Model9's cloud data management for mainframe solutions with the BMC AMI product portfolio will enable customers to modernize more quickly and safely while fully leveraging their investment in existing trusted infrastructure.”

Founded in 1980 by former Shell employees, BMC provides a number of mainframe-related software and service offerings as well as orchestration, management, and operations solutions. BMC was acquired by KKR in 2018 from a private investor group led by Bain Capital Private Equity and Golden Gate Capital together with GIC, Insight Venture Partners, and Elliott Management.

Model9 had previously raised $13.8 million across three funding rounds. The company’s technology is also used in AWS’ Mainframe Modernization service. The company has also previously partnered with PureStorage and Hitachi Vantara.
