Beyon Group’s telecoms unit Batelco and Qareeb Data Centres have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a data center in Bahrain.
At the Gateway Gulf Investment Forum earlier this week, the companies said they would deliver colocation services across the Kingdom of Bahrain and explore the feasibility of offering managed digital services.
Located in Manama, the facility is the same one included in Batelco’s Data Oasis project, announced in May last year.
At the time, it was reported that the facility would be built on a 140,000 sqm (1.5 million sq ft) site in the south of the kingdom. Other specifications were not shared, but the facility is set to land the SeaMeWe-6 and Batelco-owned Al Khaleej cables.
In June last year, Batelco said its data center would be 100 percent solar-powered.
“In line with the strategy of our growing presence in the digital infrastructure space, and more specifically in the data center market, we continue to explore potential partnerships that can positively impact these initiatives,” said Maitham Abdulla, CEO at Batelco.
Annemarie Van Zadelhoff, chief strategy officer at Qareeb Data Centres, added: “The data center market is experiencing significant growth regionally with an undeniable increase in customer demands, particularly for local Edge colocation facilities. We are excited to work with Batelco to provide us with an excellent starting point for our regional expansion plans.”
Batelco also operates another Tier III certified data center in Halama, offering 2.75MW and capacity for 250 racks.
According to its website, the upcoming facility will be Qareeb Data Centres’ first build. Little other information can be found online about the company.
