Amazon Web Services (AWS) is planning to invest a further $5bn in data centers in South Korea.

The investment will include the construction of new AI data centers in the Incheon and Gyeonggi regions, and it builds on a previous $4bn commitment to the country made in June of this year.

The previous investment included plans with SK Group to develop an AI data center in Ulsan, which broke ground in September 2025.

As per a report from Bloomberg, the additional $5bn investment was pledged in a meeting between South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung, and AWS chief Matt Garman.

President Lee said regarding the agreement: "The South Korean government is actively promoting the construction of an ‘AI highway’ to ensure that AI can be utilized at any time in industrial and research settings, with the goal of becoming one of the top three global AI powers. Amazon’s decision to make a large-scale additional investment in AI data centers will further accelerate the development of South Korea’s AI ecosystem.”

He added: “We expect Amazon to strengthen partnerships with domestic companies and create various cooperation models in the process of advancing its business. The South Korean government will also actively play a bridging role for prosperity, moving toward the future together with global economic actors.”

AWS has a cloud region in South Korea, located in Seoul, with four availability zones that launched in 2016. The company is also building a data center in Seo-gu, Incheon.

In 2021, AWS announced it would be bringing its AWS Ground Station platform to the Seoul campus. The company previously partnered with SK Telecom on its Wavelength zone in the country.
