The Commonwealth Bank of Australia has completed the migration of its data to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Also down under, NSW workers’ compensation insurer icare has renewed its contract with the cloud provider.

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia, also known as the CBA or CommBank, has been moving its data platform to AWS since July 2024 and announced the completion of the migration earlier this month.

The migration was undertaken with help from HCLTech, and has seen more than 61,000 data pipelines moved to AWS.

CommBank hopes that this will enable it to "accelerate the integration of AI across the bank."

Terri Sutherland, CommBank’s lead for data platforms, said: "Migrating our data to the cloud is a significant milestone for the bank. Every day, we’re using AI to make around 55 million decisions intended to benefit our customers and our people.

"We have over 2,000 AI models feeding on approximately 157 billion data points – making CBA one of the largest corporate users of AI in the country. This initiative not only enhances our data capabilities but also supports our strategic priority to deliver global best digital experiences and technology for our customers."

Sutherland added that, by moving 100 percent of its data to the cloud, CommBank will be able to further reduce its on-premises data center footprint, and scale its operations.

Earlier this year, CommBank said it would likely complete its cloud migration by May of this year. The bank also signed a five-year agreement with AWS in February of this year.

CommBank's interest in AI has been established since last year. In September 2024, the CBA revealed plans to use AWS' EC2 P5 instances with Nvidia H100s in the cloud giant's Sydney region to create an "AI factory." The company has since said that the AI Factory has helped speed up the migration project.

icare renews AWS contract for AU$29m

New South Wales' compensation insurer icare has renewed its contract with AWS.

In a AU$29 million (US$18.83m) contract, icare will continue to use the AWS cloud platform for three years, reports iTNews.

A spokesperson told ITN: “AWS has supported icare cloud infrastructure since 2016. The contract aligns with icare and the NSW government’s digital strategy.”

icare was established in 2015 along with the State Insurance and Care Governance Act, and handles insurance and care services for workers.

Prior to using AWS, icare contracted Capgemini as the primary supplier and integrator for its core insurance platform. ITN notes that in, icare’s 2023–24 annual report, the organization said it contracted Data#3 to migrate a number of applications to AWS.

The renewal was signed through the Digital Transformation Agency's whole-of-government deal.

The DTA signed the whole-of-government deal in January 2025, building on a previous 2019 deal with AWS. That contract sees AWS provide support for Australian Public Service technology and cloud upskilling, offer services through a standardized contracting framework, and expand benefits to all levels of government, including local councils, State and Federal Governments, and all public sector entities.

In June of last year, reports emerged that AWS was building a data center for Australia's government that would handle top-secret information. The data center and cloud system are being developed as a partnership between AWS and the Australian government, and the latter will invest A$2 billion (US$1.3bn) in the new system over the next ten years.
