The Commonwealth Bank of Australia is extending its partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) by five years.
CommBank, also known as CBA, has signed a five-year agreement with AWS that will see the company remain the bank's preferred cloud provider.
The bank is using AWS' cloud and AI service to develop its CommBiz Gen AI-powered messaging service which took just six weeks to deliver.
CommBank CTO Rodrigo Castillo said: "As customer adoption of digital banking continues to grow, we’re harnessing AI and cloud to deliver faster, safer, and more personalized digital banking services."
Jamie Simon, director of Financial Services, AWS Australia and New Zealand, added: "The CommBank and AWS relationship spans more than a decade, and we are excited to expand upon it as we support their digital transformation through this next phase of cloud adoption. Together we will simplify and standardize their technology foundations on the most secure and resilient cloud platform, enabling faster experimentation and adoption of AI and other key technologies."
Throughout CommBank's relationship with AWS, it has migrated core platforms and applications including Netbank, CommSec, and Murex from on-premises to AWS' cloud platform.
In September 2024, CommBank revealed it was using AWS EC2 P5 instances to develop an "artificial intelligence factory." EC2 P5 instances were launched in July 2023 and provide customers with access to Nvidia H100 GPUs. By the end of 2024, CommBank had used more than 2,000 AI models to improve customer experience.
In 2018, CommBank was forced to apologize for failing to disclose the loss of 12 million user records in 2016, following an investigation that revealed the tapes on which the information was stored were mishandled by the subcontractor paid to destroy them.
AWS is a popular cloud platform amongst Aussie financial services companies. The likes of Westpac and Macquarie Group are also customers of AWS.
