European data center firm AtlasEdge has relaunched a data center in Leeds, UK, after acquiring and renovating the facility.

Since acquiring it in 2022, AtlasEdge has since invested more than £13 million ($16.3m) to upgrade the site. The company said the facility, known as LBA001, is the first Tier III standard data center in the city.

"We are delighted to be launching this site, the first of its kind in Leeds and one which is purpose-built to serve growing requirements for lower latency, higher performance, and localized solutions," said Giuliano Di Vitantonio, CEO, AtlasEdge. "This is yet another example of us taking a site with existing connectivity, and leveraging our combined expertise to deliver an outstanding new facility which will act as an important regional aggregation hub and support the next wave of growth in digital infrastructure for the surrounding area.”

The Digital Realty, Liberty Global, and DigitalBridge-backed company announced it acquired Cornelius House, the largest purpose-built data center in the Yorkshire city, back in February 2022.

“The infrastructure that this state-of-the-art data center brings to Leeds is game-changing, and, as an anchor customer, we are very proud to support this launch,” added David Cusworth, EMEA managing director, Hardy Fisher Services. “It allows companies to have the connectivity they need around the clock, the security to mitigate against internal and external risks, a manned site and technical team for support, and carbon efficiency thanks to the cooling systems that are used. It’s the full package, and it’s available on our clients’ doorstep.”

Operational since 2008, Cornelius House is an 11,000 sq ft (1,020 sqm) data center with a capacity for 400 racks. It was originally a bank gold bullion store before being taken over for use as a data center by Pipex Communications in 2001.

AtlasEdge was formed as a joint venture between telecoms company Liberty Global and digital infrastructure fund DigitalBridge in 2021, using facilities from Liberty’s telecoms companies and DigitalBridge’s European Edge assets. Digital Realty has since invested in the company.

In November 2021, Atlas acquired twelve data centers across Europe from Colt Data Centre Services (DCS). The company is also building two data centers in Manchester and recently launched a new facility in Hamburg, Germany, and acquired a facility in Vienna, Austria.
