OpenAI's Stargate venture has had a slow start, the Wall Street Journal reports, noting that it has yet to complete a single deal for a data center.

Despite the SoftBank-OpenAI partnership yet to bear fruit, OpenAI has signed deals without SoftBank, including with CoreWeave and Oracle.

For the latter cloud provider, OpenAI was earlier this month reported to be behind a $30 billion-a-year cloud deal.

OpenAI has today confirmed the 4.5GW deal for Stargate data center capacity in the US, spread across the country.

According to the companies, along with the Stargate I site in Abilene, Texas, OpenAI and Oracle will now have more than 5GW of data center capacity under development.

This capacity will involve more than two million chips.

OpenAI said: "This significantly advances our progress toward the commitment we announced at the White House in January to invest $500 billion into 10GW of AI infrastructure in the US over the next four years. We now expect to exceed our initial commitment thanks to strong momentum with partners including Oracle and SoftBank."

OpenAI claimed that the new deal will lead to 100,000 jobs in construction and operations roles across the US.

In addition to news of the expanded agreement with Oracle, OpenAI said that "parts of the [Abilene] facility are now up and running," adding that Oracle began delivering the first Nvidia GB200 racks last month.

The company said: "We recently began running early training and inference workloads, using this capacity to push the limits of OpenAI’s next-generation frontier research."

OpenAI is still planning to self-build its own data centers, the company's director of physical infrastructure told DCD in the latest issue of the magazine.

It also plans to develop a Stargate data center campus in the United Arab Emirates with Oracle, Nvidia, Cisco, SoftBank, and G42 involved. It is searching for sites for other projects across the world.
