Alaska's Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (Alaska DOT&PF) has adopted Armada's Edge computing offering for its drone program.

Alaska DOT&PF is responsible for managing thousands of miles of highways, 237 rural airports, two international airports, and the Alaska Marine Highway System, as well as the constant monitoring of environmental events such as landslides, avalanches and flooding.

To achieve this, the department relies on drone imagery while operating in a region without significant data center capacity.

A major challenge facing Alaska DOT&PF was latency, and the department has resolved this with the Armada Edge Platform.

Previously, it relied on the cloud - with the department physically driving to the nearest city and uploading data from memory cards to the cloud. Ultimately, it could take more than 28 hours to have usable data.

The first step of adopting Armada's technology was the deployment of Atlas – an ERP platform – but the department later also deployed Armada's Galleon containerized Edge data centers.

Alaska DOT&PF now has two Galleons in operation – one at the Remote Sensing Lab in Anchorage in an existing building, and a 20-foot modular data center in Fairbanks. From both data centers, the department runs the Armada Edge Platform, and can ingest live drone feeds and run analysis where the data is generated.

The department can now operate with a decision-making window of just minutes, and was recently used during Typhoon Halong.

Armada's Galleon containerized data centers are designed to operate in challenging environments, and can be custom-configured with CPUs, GPUs, and XPUs depending on the needs of a customer. Earlier this month, a Galleon data center was used during the US Navy's UNITAS exercise, during which a Galleon was deployed on board a ship.

Earlier this year, Armada raised $131 million from investors and launched its "Leviathan" offering, which is a megawatt-scale modular AI data center offering. In November, it launched a "Beacon" pod offering for oil rig deployments.

Also in 2025, Armada has deployed its Edge containerized data centers with Eclipse for hydrogen-powered data centers, UnityCloud to establish a sovereign cloud for tribal nations in the US, Tampnet for offshore oil rigs, the US Navy in South Carolina, Aramco in Saudi Arabia, and Newlab in Detroit and Riyadh.
