A new inference AI cloud provider has emerged from stealth.
Blackfuel officially launched on September 30, announcing plans for its first deployment at Digital Realty's BCN1 data center in Barcelona, Spain.
BCN1 offers 161,500 sq ft (15,000 sqm) of colocation space and was launched earlier this year.
The first deployment will be built on liquid-cooled Dell PowerRack systems featuring Dell PowerEdge XE9785L servers with AMD Instinct MI355X accelerators. While starting with the Barcelona location, Blackfuel has plans for additional deployments elsewhere in Spain, as well as in Finland and France.
The company will offer dedicated GPU clusters, managed inference and reserved serving capacity, alongside an "inference pool" for its token platform.
The company is also introducing fractional GPU capacity, which will enable customers to reserve a share of a model's serving capacity for a fixed monthly fee, instead of renting an entire multi-GPU deployment.
The company intends for its platform to support multiple accelerator architectures and hardware generations, enabling customers to select systems based on workload requirements.
Xavier Fischer, co-founder of Blackfuel, said: “Europe has the electrons and it has the researchers. What it needs today is to own more of its AI capacity, turning what is often an operating cost paid abroad into a capital asset on European balance sheets. We are not an inference company that happens to own hardware, and we are not a landlord that happens to sell tokens. We contract the demand first, we build against it, and every GPU we did not contract has to earn its keep. That order is what makes the asset financeable."
"The next phase of AI will be measured in useful tokens per megawatt, and delivering them takes more than compute alone. It takes power, cooling and connectivity working together as one platform,” said Chris Sharp, CTO, Digital Realty. “By bringing Blackfuel's inference platform onto ServiceFabric, enterprises can reach high-performance AI services on the same connected ecosystem where their applications and data already live. Barcelona is the first proof point, and we're excited to help Blackfuel scale from here.”
Blackfuel was founded by Fischer, Dali Kilani, and Charles Kantor.
