A major earthquake in Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula has caused Internet outages, impacting ISPs Rostelecom and InterkamService.

The earthquake, off the coast of Russia's far east, triggered a tsunami across the Pacific, with alerts raised across Japan, Hawaii, Guam, and the US west coast.

"Internet outages have been registered in Kamchatka, Russia, after an [8.8 magnitude] earthquake; the decline in network connectivity comes amid reports of power outages," network outage tracker NetBlocks said.

Russia’s Geophysical Survey said that the quake occurred approximately 149 kilometers southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Russian authorities have reported limited damage and few injured people so far and issued evacuation orders for Sakhalin Island.

The government has also warned of possible aftershocks.
