The major network outage impacted voice, data, and mobile money services on July 5. All services have since been restored. MTN has more than 24 million customers in Uganda.

In an update yesterday, Mulinge apologized to MTN customers while addressing the media following the outage.

“To every customer who was affected by Sunday’s service interruption, we sincerely apologise. We understand the inconvenience it caused and appreciate your patience as we worked to restore our services," said Mulinge.

Elaborating on the cause of the network outage, Mulinge explained that a disruption at one of MTN's data centers was to blame.

"The interruption was caused by a power disruption at one of our data centers. It was not a cybersecurity incident. Customer data remained secure, Mobile Money balances remained safe, and all services have been fully restored," added Mulinge.

Further details, including the location of the data center and the cause of the issue, were not disclosed.

MTN said that customers will be compensated for the downtime.
