Another data center could be coming to Finnish Lapland, close to the Swedish border.

Yle reports that Bilt Tek, which opened a 70MW data center in Veitsiluoto, Kemi at the beginning of the year, is expanding its operations in Kemi with a new data center.

The firm is reportedly planning a five–10MW data center in the Tervaharju area of Kemi next year. It was granted a construction permit to develop on 7,000 sqm (75,345 sq ft) of city-owned land earlier this month.

The data center is coming to the area between Perämerentie and Kiveliönkatu, near the fire station and the highway. The facility will reportedly be connected to the local district heating network, with preliminary discussions being held with power firm Kemin Energia.

Kemi is a town and municipality of Finland, located approximately 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the city of Tornio and the Swedish border in northwest Finland.

News that Bilt Tek was developing a large facility in the old premises of the Stora Enso paper mill in the Veitsiluoto area of ​​Kemi surfaced last year. The paper mill shut down in 2021.

Few details are available about the company, which has a minimal social media presence and a placeholder website.

Data center proposed in Kitee

A new data center could also be coming to eastern Finland.

Yle reports the city of Kitee is in the final stages of contract negotiations with an unnamed European data center operator.

A building of approximately five hectares is planned for an area of ​​ten hectares in the Puhos industrial area that would be sold for around €200,000 ($233,366). Reports that a deal is close have been circulating since the summer, but further details were not shared.

Kitee is a town and a municipality in the province of Eastern Finland, and is part of the North Karelia region, close to the country’s eastern border with Russia. This would be the first data center in the area.

Business Finland lists a Puhos Brown Data Center Site available for development in Kitee.

An existing industrial area with a former chipboard factory building, the area totals more than 100 hectares and currently offers a 10MW power supply scalable up to 200MW via connection to the national grid. The excess heat can be recovered with a cost-efficient natural water cooling and there is a possibility for a connection to a district heating network.
