Metrics such as PUE and WUE have provided a benchmark for data centers to show their sustainability credentials. However, the universal application of PUE has caused some to question its effectiveness, suggesting that it is oversimplified and misapplied. In addition, scope 3 emissions can be notoriously difficult to measure and therefore reduce.

On International Data Center Day, DCD brings you this timely debate on whether PUE is still a useful tool for measuring sustainability in the industry. We will consider if/how organizations can report on scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions accurately, and what tools are available to support. With authorities cracking down on ‘greenwashing’; and regulations such as EU CSRD on the horizon, how can data centers show that they are meeting their emissions targets? Is it even possible to create a like-for-like sustainability metric within data centers given their varying workloads, and what technologies are available to support on the sustainability journey?
