Moving Google data centers to 24x7 carbon-free energy
In 2018 Google announced its largest-ever purchase of renewable energy – and the largest of any corporation in history – comprised of 18 new energy deals. Google called the initiative Project Ocean and was able to do this by streamlining its renewable energy procurement process, which it did by running its first-ever reverse auctions for wind and solar projects.
Buying enough clean energy to make up for your dirty energy is one thing; but using all clean energy 24/7 is another especially when you’re building at hyperscale. This presentation takes a look at the challenges Google faces in taking their commitment to the next level and to power the world’s largest fleet of data centers directly with renewable energy.
