Hitachi Data Systems has released what it claims is the first unified storage product with enterprise class virtualization for all data types, including block, file and object.

The Hitachi Unified Storage VM (HUS VM), according to Hitachi, allows for 90% faster data migration and 30% better TCO through the simplification of operations and more efficient storage management across all virtualized storage assets, including multivendor storage.

The storage environment can also be managed using Hitachi’s Command Suite management software.

US-based Devon Energy lead storage engineer Steven Ruby said the utility is using HUS VM in its primary and secondary data centers.

“This allows us to be agile and efficient within our primary and secondary data centers without the need for special power and floor space,” Ruby said.

“The fact we rolled the system on to tour data center floor and within 45 minutes had more capacity and capabilities ready for a production workload than our previous platform shows that this new array is going to be a game changer for companies looking for enterprise functionality in a smaller footprint.”

Hitachi said small and medium enterprises are in need of scalable and versatile virtual storage solutions to help them keep up with increasing demands and tight budgets.

The HUS VM comes with up to 64PB of virtualized capacity, which can include storage systems of other vendors.

It can consolidate block, file and object data natively on to a single platform, which also allows customers to share resources for different applications.
