For many years there has been a trend in larger facilities away from Direct Expansion (DX) cooling towards chilled water. While the upfront cost of a chilled water system can be higher, the great energy efficiency and lower maintenance costs usually compensate.

With temperatures rising in data halls to save energy, this paper looks at the different ways chilled water systems are being deployed in data centers, including variable primary and primary/secondary considerations.
