Ty Schmitt
VP, Fellow, Dell TechnologiesTy Schmitt is the Vice President and Dell Fellow in Dell Technology Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) CTIO organization. He holds a mechanical engineering degree from Texas A&M and has 34 years of experience in manufacturing, IT hardware, thermal and acoustical design/testing, engineering management, advanced data center thermal simulation and cooling solutions, sustainability, and modular data center design/manufacturing. Ty's early career experience was in machining, injection mold design/fabrication, manufacturing, and project engineering. His career moved from manufacturing to product/system design at Dell in 1993 where he was lead mechanical architect and engineer for 12 of Dell's first enterprise servers.
After 7 years of server design, Ty moved into an engineering management position leading teams of mechanical engineers in product design and testing. In this role, he created Dell's Enterprise mechanical architecture, thermal and acoustical engineering and test organization. This led to a broader leadership and customer facing role in data center thermal simulation and testing. A key milestone in this position was the creation of Dell's first data center thermal test lab ... a 1MW, 1000W/square foot controlled environment used for IT to HVAC thermal testing and qualification and most importantly a vehicle to understand the data center environment.
In 2007, Ty co-founded Dell's DCS (Data Center Solutions) organization as the group's mechanical/thermal SME. DCS provided custom IT, rack scale design/integration and modular data center solutions with focus on the customer, quality, and supply chain. In this role, he created and built DCS's modular data center engineering organization. Over the past 15 years it has successfully architected, designed, and delivered hundreds of modular DC solutions for hyperscale, enterprise, telco, automotive, Edge, and AI customers.
In 2013, Ty became Vice President and Fellow at Dell. In 2020, he moved into Dell's Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) CTO organization. In this role, I he owns data center technology and sustainability strategy with a heavy focus on their technical community and customer/partner enablement. He also serves as the executive sponsor for our modular data center business.
