Ibbi Almufti SEAssociate Principal, Arup
Ibbi Almufti, SE, PE, LEED AP, is an Associate Principal in the Advanced Technology + Research group in Arup’s San Francisco office where he leads the Risk and Resilience practice. He is the City Resilience skills network leader for Arup's Americas Region and he manages the Seismic skills network for Arup globally.
Ibbi works at the intersection of design, risk, and resilience. He is a licensed structural engineer with emphasis in earthquake engineering. He leads a multidisciplinary team to design buildings to be more resilient against multiple hazards. He has performed numerous risk assessments for institutional and corporate asset holders and developed resilience strategies integrating physical and operational measures to improve business continuity.
Ibbi recently led the development of the REDi™ Rating System which provides owners, architects and engineers a framework for implementing “resilience-based earthquake design”, a holistic design, planning, and verification approach for achieving “beyond-code” earthquake resilience objectives. He and his team are now developing a similar guideline for flood resilience.
Ibbi is a member of the LEED Resilience Working Group, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute's (EERI) Resilience Panel, the Board of Director's of EERI Northern California Chapter, the ASCE Disaster Resilience Committee, and is on the FEMA/USGS Project 17 Committee which helps determine seismic hazard and acceptable risk targets for future building codes.
Ibbi has been recognized as an industry expert on resilience topics and has spoken at major conferences including the AIA Convention, GreenBuild, Living Futures unConference, the National Earthquake Engineering Conference, SEAOC Annual Convention, National Disaster Preparedness Center Resilience Conference, and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute.
