Arjan Westerhoff
Principal, Operational Sustainability, EquinixArjan has worked in the data center industry since 2000 and has knowledge and operations experience in the data center infrastructure with focus on efficiency & sustainability.
Before joining Equinix, he was mainly operating a datacenter for 18 years and was actively involved in several energy efficiency and sustainability projects. Between 2009 - 2013, he was involved in the first ATES (Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage) system in a datacenter, together with cooling towers for charging them during the winter, resulting in an energy saving of 86% for cooling only. In 2017, he implemented the first a chemical free and water saving technology based on electrolysis in the Netherlands and reduced the discharged water by 90%.
Arjan is currently working at Equinix as Principal Operational Sustainability. He is creating global alignment in energy efficiency and sustainability, by supporting the data center teams on multiple topics like implementing best practices & knowledge sharing in their journey to make the data centers more energy efficiency and sustainable around the world.
After many years mainly focusing on energy efficiency, Arjan is now focusing on two other main topics: water and measurement & reporting. Arjan also supports the Dutch Datacenter Association in the ISO/IEC 303134 committee, who is the owner of the data center KPIs: PUE, WUE, CUE, REF, ERF, REF, CER.
