At Huawei Connect 2025, the all-optical access session themed ‘Boost computing with fiber: 10 Gbps all-optical broadband ushers in a new era of inclusive AI’ was successfully held in Shanghai.
More than 200 participants – including business leaders, industry experts, scholars, and researchers – gathered to discuss the evolving landscape of campus networks and the transformative potential of F5G-A technology.
This event shone a spotlight on how F5G-A can be seamlessly integrated across key industries such as ISPs, manufacturing, and healthcare, so as to accelerate the deployment of AI applications and address critical challenges in the journey toward industrial intelligence.
Ronald Freund, head of department photonic networks and systems and chief of F5G OpenLab from Fraunhofer HHI introduced the next-generation high-speed optical access networks and the latest achievements of the F5G OpenLab.
He said: "Through proof-of-concept (PoC) validations in typical scenarios such as Edge cloud-based visual inspection and manufacturing control, AGV/robot cloud collaboration, and FTTR multi-room smart coverage, as well as practical assessments of industrial optical network benefits and green data center energy efficiency, F5G technology has demonstrated significant advantages in low latency, high bandwidth, and energy savings.
“These results provide strong support for the evolution of F5G-A standards and the development of green and intelligent optical networks."
York Liu, vice president of Huawei's Enterprise Optical Domain, stated that driven by both policies and standards, a green 10G all-optical network has become a key digital infrastructure and an essential enabler for the digital and intelligent transformation of various industries in the AI era.
For home networks, Huawei's FTTR solution enhances connectivity, storage, video, computing, and sensing capabilities to accelerate the adoption of AI applications in homes.
In campus scenarios such as education, healthcare, hotel, and manufacturing, Huawei has launched the F5G-A FTTO solution to redefine campus networks with four core capabilities: ultra-broadband, simplified architecture, intelligent connectivity, and intelligent sensing.
For small and medium-sized campuses, Huawei offers the FTTO for Small and Medium-sized Campus solution to help partners and customers build all-optical networks quickly and cost-effectively.
Moving forward, Huawei looks forward to working with customers and partners to boost computing with fiber, drive industrial intelligence and low-carbon development, and collectively advance smart industries in the AI era.
F5G-A has been widely used in a wide range of scenarios, including home, education, healthcare, manufacturing, and hotel. At this session, representatives from a variety of industries shared their perspectives and best practices regarding F5G-A all-optical networks.
In the ISP sector, Martial Neumuller, network manager of Vialis, France, said: "To meet rising demand for ultra-high-speed broadband in homes and businesses, Vialis has partnered with Huawei to launch XGS-PON and FTTR solutions that deliver symmetrical 10 Gbps connectivity and whole-house Wi-Fi 7 coverage.
“This not only enhances user experience and satisfaction but also reinforces Vialis's competitive position in the regional broadband market."
In the manufacturing sector, Li Jianwei, party committee member and deputy general manager of Wuliangye Group and party secretary of Yibin Paper Co., Ltd, shared their achievements in building an F5G-A 10G all-optical network ecosystem campus.
He noted that the F5G-A 10G all-optical network serves as a robust foundation for the digital transformation of the Wuliangye campus, enabling high-bandwidth, reliable intelligent production.
With IoT and AI deeply integrated, the all-optical network will help the Wuliangye campus achieve true intelligence and become a benchmark for efficient and smart transformation in China's manufacturing industry.
In the healthcare sector, Qiu Yingpeng, deputy director of the division of digital health research & data center, China National Health Development Research Center, summarized the advantages and potential benefits of all-optical networks in hospitals, drawing on scientific research and survey data from frontline medical professionals.
He said that all-optical networks offer significant cost efficiencies in smart hospital construction. The average cost per data point is lower than that of traditional networks, primarily due to lower cable and energy consumption costs.
In addition, all-optical networks provide long service life and scalable capacity, effectively accommodating changes in hospital size, network architecture, and data point density. This ultimately supports the sustainable development of smart hospitals.
The Shenshan Center of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital is driving forward China's national ‘Gigabit Optical Network’ strategy by leveraging F5G-A technology to build an all-optical hospital network.
At the session, Zheng Yiqing, executive dean of the Shenshan Center of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, stated that the F5G-A 10G all-optical network lays the foundation for the hospital's smart transformation, drawing on the Sun Yat-sen University's technical strengths and the opportunity presented by hospital reconstruction and expansion.
Key technologies are accelerating the development of 5G-powered hospitals to enable all-scenario intelligence in diagnostics, treatment, medical imaging, service delivery, and hospital management.
These advancements take treatment efficiency and patient experience to new levels, positioning this hospital as a high-quality model of smart transformation for China's regional medical centers.
Looking ahead, Huawei will continue to drive innovation in optical access technologies and collaborate with partners, customers, and industry organizations to explore new applications, incubate solutions, and promote standards.
These efforts will help to advance the F5G-A 10G all-optical network industry in a rapid, sustainable, and resilient manner.
