xAI is planning to deploy an 88-acre solar array to provide power to its Colossus supercomputer facility in southwest Memphis, Tennessee.

According to local reports, the Elon Musk-backed firm submitted site plans for the solar project to city and county officials last week. The plans outline solar deployments to the west and south of the data center, located on Paul R. Lowery Road.

“We are excited to bring this clean, energy-efficient renewable power solution to our data center facility,” the company wrote in its application.

xAI launched its Colossus supercomputer last year, at a new data center housed in a former Electrolux factory in Memphis’s Boxtown district. The facility reportedly runs around 100,000 GPUs, but Musk said it would eventually like to run one million GPUs in Memphis.

The company caused controversy earlier this year, following revelations that it had deployed large amounts of gas turbines at the data center site. Environmental groups claimed that xAI did not obtain the necessary permits to legally operate the 26 natural gas turbines that were installed on the site to power its operations. In May, it was revealed that the company had installed 168 Tesla Megapacks at the site to replace some of the turbines.

Earlier this month, xAI announced that it had begun installing Megapacks at its second Colossus supercomputer project in Memphis. The company acquired the one million sq ft (92,905 sqm) property earlier in the year for a reported $80 million.
