VodafoneThree has confirmed it will once again deploy temporary mobile masts to support the UK's summer event season.

The telco noted that work has already begun for the deployment of these masts, also known as Cells on Wheels (COWs).

In total, VodafoneThree said it will deploy these COWs more than 130 times, with some events to have more than one of these masts.

These COWs are used by people attending the event, plus organizers and vendors working at said events.

According to the carrier, these masts have been upgraded to support both Vodafone and Three's 4G and 5G coverage, as the telco continues to push on with its network integration post-merger.

The upgrades are part of VodafoneThree’s £11 billion ($14.66bn) investment program after Vodafone and Three completed their long-awaited merger in June.

VodafoneThree has already deployed COWs this year, doing so earlier this month at the Cheltenham Race Festival. The company said it was able to deliver more capacity, plus faster downlink (1.4Gbps download) and uplink (190Mbps upload) speeds than other telcos at the event.

The telco noted that it will provide COWs at a number of sporting events, including the London Marathon & Wimbledon, plus the Scottish Open Golf Tournament, plus several more horse racing meetings, including The Grand National and Royal Ascot, plus music festivals, agriculture shows, and other events. The final deployment will be at Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland.

“This year, we’ll be bringing our herd of COWs to some of the UK’s largest special events, delivering fast and reliable coverage to our customers," said Andrea Donà, chief network officer, VodafoneThree.

The carrier has previously deployed COWs in the UK, notably deploying nine of the temporary masts at Glastonbury in 2023.
