UK network operator Virgin Media O2 has carried out mobile network upgrades at 22 Haven holiday sites around the country.

The telco paired with infrastructure-as-a-service company Freshwave to carry out the upgrades, which are part of O2's Mobile Transformation Plan.

Earlier this year, Virgin Media O2 announced plans to invest £700 million ($944m) into its mobile network this year in an effort to improve its reliability, speed, and coverage across the UK.

The first four upgraded sites, which include Thornwick Bay Holiday Park in Yorkshire and Skegness Holiday Park in Lincolnshire, are now live, with additional parks set to follow throughout the summer.

According to Virgin Media O2, the network upgrades will enhance 4G and 5G connectivity at these holiday parks.

“With more people choosing to holiday in the UK, we are working to improve our mobile network in some of the most popular staycation destinations," said Dr Robert Joyce, director of mobile access engineering at O2.

"This work with Haven is a great example of our Mobile Transformation Plan in action, bringing more reliable connectivity to the places people need it most. So, whether our customers are off to Skegness, Berwick, or Cleethorpes, they can stay connected this summer.”

In June, Virgin Media announced an agreement to acquire 78.8 MHz of spectrum from Vodafone in the UK, in a deal worth £343 million ($463m).

The spectrum will provide the carrier with a network boost, taking Virgin Media O2's total mobile spectrum share to approximately 30 percent of the UK market.
