Verizon has announced it will work with Nvidia to develop a range of AI applications that will run over its 5G private network with private Mobile Edge Compute (MEC).

In its announcement this week, the US carrier noted that its 5G private network will pair with Nvidia's AI Enterprise software platform and NIM microservices.

According to Verizon, this will "deliver real-time AI services on premises for enterprise customers."

The carrier stated that Verizon engineers will begin demos of the solution early next year.

Verizon explained that the AI private 5G platform will be plug-and-play, noting it will be available to third-party developers to create new applications and services.

The solution will also support multi-tenancy for multiple use cases or customers while it's designed to be modular so that it can scale as needed, added Verizon.

Verizon said that the stack is being built to handle "compute=intensive apps including Generative AI Large Language Models and Vision Language Models, Video streaming, broadcast management, Computer Vision (CV), Augmented/Virtual/Extended Reality (AR/VR/XR), Autonomous Mobile Robot/ Automated Guided Vehicle (AMR/AGV), and IoT."

“Generative AI, with its predictive capabilities, is poised to be a critical component of digital transformation and future business growth in almost all industries,” said Srini Kalapala, SVP of technology and product development at Verizon.

“We're leveraging our network's unique strengths including private networks and Verizon’s global industry leadership in private MEC, combined with Nvidia’s AI compute capabilities to enable real-time AI applications that require security, ultra-low latency, and high bandwidth. Our ongoing investment in our network infrastructure means we're uniquely positioned to deliver these powerful AI services at scale, driving the digital transformation and fueling the future growth of businesses worldwide.”

Ronnie Vasishta, SVP of telecom at Nvidia, added: “Verizon’s integration of Nvidia’s full-stack AI platform into its new solution for running AI workloads on private 5G networks is a big step forward in helping enterprises of all sizes reach their business objectives faster with AI.”

Verizon previously announced in August that it's using AI to protect and prevent damage to its fiber infrastructure.

The company said that the partnership with Nvidia will enable ultra-low latency, high bandwidth and reliability, improved security, scalability, and the ability for AI processing at the Edge.

During an earnings call in October, the carrier also outlined its expectation that Generative AI will provide a solid revenue stream in the future. Still, it cautioned that it won't happen overnight.

"I think AI is definitely over a time frame. So how I think about AI, generative AI especially, in the beginning right now, we see large language models going to the big data centers," said Hans Vestberg, Verizon CEO, in October. Vestberg has also previously claimed that no other telco is better prepared for Edge than Verizon.
