The US Census Bureau is expanding its data center capacity and is looking at Atlanta, Ga., as the location for its new data center. The agency has been lobbied by Georgia State University, together with the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and others to locate the facility in the city.
The $1.1m data center will be the highest-level business, social and health statistical data storage and processing facility of the US government. If located in Atlanta, it will be built in the building of the Atlanta Federal Reserve. The bureau's other data centers are located in Boston, New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C.
What creates interest from researchers is access to the confidential government data stored at the facility.
The data center will be funded by the National Science Foundation and other institutions.
