The Recod.ai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, linked to Brazilian university Unicamp's Institute of Computing, has launched a new HPC cluster.
The new Abaporu cluster was acquired with funds from Shell Brasil as part of the Center for Energy and Petroleum Studies (CEPETRO/Unicamp).
Named Abaporu - in reference to the work by Tarsila do Amaral - the system is made up of 28 Nvidia H200 and L40 GPUs.
The initial investment was approximately $1 million (5.3 million reais). Installed in the computing institute's data center, the cluster will be used mainly in projects that integrate AI and petroleum engineering, with a focus on optimizing operational decisions in pre-salt areas.
When available, it can also be used in other research initiatives conducted by Recod.ai and the computing institute.
Abaporu is currently considered to be Unicamp's largest artificial intelligence cluster and one of the most advanced university research clusters in Brazil, according to Recod.ai's coordinator, Professor Anderson Rocha.
Recod.ai and Shell Brasil have had a partnership for more than six years, focusing on the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to meet the challenges of the energy industry. This collaboration is currently moving into a new research cycle, scheduled to last until 2028, aimed at developing generative language models applied to the simulation and management of oil reservoirs.
The aim of these models is to enable engineering and geoscience professionals to interact with complex simulation systems using natural language. The proposal is to transform traditional technical commands into conversational instructions, making it easier to use the tools.
