The UK's University of Portsmouth has awarded Sudlows a £2.6 million ($3.52m) data center contract.

According to a contract award notice, data center provider Sudlows will handle the "supply, installation of the Nuffield Data Centre management equipment and infrastructure," as well as "all associated external works and the supply and installation of the site-wide fiber optic cable."

The contract will run from August 21, 2025, to April 3, 2026.

According to a case study published, Sudlows was previously awarded a £2.25m ($3.04m) contract with the university for the design and build of a modular data center, and the migration from the existing Mercantile house data center.

That data center offered 3MVA of capacity, space for 47 racks, and was cooled by Airedale's CRAH and DeltaChill solutions. Spanning 300 sqm (3,230 sq ft), it operates with a PUE of 1.9. According to Sudlows, that project was completed within nine weeks, in time for the start of the new academic year. Airdale won ‘The Data Centre Cooling Impact Award’ at the RAC Cooling Industry Awards for the project in 2014.

It is unclear if the new data center contract will be upgrading the existing facility, or see the development of a new data center at the university.

In 2024, the University of Portsmouth committed to investing £250m ($338m) in a number of campus development projects, including the construction of new buildings and the refurbishment of existing facilities. It has not been stated if the data center project falls under this.

Sudlows Group was founded back in 1912. The company has been working in critical infrastructure for more than 25 years. The company has three core divisions; Critical Infrastructures, Enterprise Services, and Facilities Management. In February 2025, Sudlows Consulting - part of Sudlows Group - was acquired by engineering services firm Kent.
