Two fatalities have been confirmed after a plane crash near a data center in Colorado last Friday.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a Beech BE35 airplane crashed in the parking lot of Flexential's Denver-Englewood data center, located at 8636 Peoria Street.

Flexential is a US colocation provider. DCD has reached out for comment.

The incident occurred about a half-mile southeast of Centennial Airport in Colorado around 6:25 am local time. Upon arrival, the local fire service had to contain a fire that was "threatening a structure and a large generator."

"There was no damage to the generators or the building that was threatened, and there were no other people involved and no other issues involved in this incident,” said South Metro Fire Rescue spokesperson Brian Willie at a news conference at the scene.

The exact cause of the crash has not yet been ascertained, but records obtained by Denver7 show that the pilot had been performing touch-and-go landings at Centennial Airport before crashing.

The FAA said it and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate

Douglas County is located south of Denver, Colorado’s state capital.

In 2022, a small plane was forced to land near NTT Global’s Ashburn data center campus in Virginia. The pilot incurred minor injuries in the process.

A statement issued by Flexential says: "On Friday, September 5th, a small plane crashed on the property of our Englewood, CO data center. No Flexential employees or customers were affected in the event. No services were impacted, utility power is available, and the site remains fully operational. The data center building did not sustain any structural damage, however, three generators were taken offline for evaluation. Due to the redundant design of the facility, the remaining online generators are able to handle the power load in the event of a utility power disruption. We are assisting authorities in their ongoing investigation."
