Developers have submitted proposals to build a new data center campus outside Des Moines, Iowa.
First reported by the Des Moines Register, the Ankeny planning commission this week voted to recommend a development plan change to allow for a data center on 36 acres of land by the intersection of Southeast 90th Street and Southeast Fourmile Drive, northeast of the Northeast Mixmaster.
Known as the I-80 Commerce Center, the 35-acre site will feature two data centers and an on-site substation. One data center will space 535,555 sq ft (49,755 sqm), the other 775,520 sq ft (72,050 sqm).
The company behind the project is listed as Commerce Center LLC, owned by local real estate firm Signature Real Estate. The DM Register suggests Edge Energy is the operator behind the proposal.
Kye Nielsen, of construction firm the Will Group, said the company would be developing a data center. He stated that the only water usage for this data center would be for domestic use only, as the data center is run 100 percent off of air cooling.
City staff have recommended approval of the proposal, which will come before the City Council for final approval at a later date.
Ankeny is a city in Polk County, to the north of Des Moines. Signature lists the I-80 Commerce site as a build-to-suit opportunity on its website.
Edged Energy is part of Endeavour, which was set up by Aligned founder Jakob Carnemark.
The company has data centers either operating or in development in Madrid and Barcelona in Spain; Lisbon, Portugal; and across the US including Missouri, Arizona, Texas, Georgia, Ohio, and Illinois. Edged uses a waterless cooling system from sister company ThermalWorks.
