President-elect Donald Trump has picked Brendan Carr to serve as the next chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Trump announced the pick yesterday via Truth Social, a social media platform owned by Trump Media.

At present, Carr is the top Republican on the FCC, the independent agency that regulates telecommunications.

The FCC Commission is currently chaired by Jessica Rosenworcel, who has been in the role since 2021, when Biden began his presidential term. Her term is set to expire in June of next year.

Carr has been a major critic of 'Big Tech' companies during his time at the FCC.

During his tenure, he has also been a vocal critic of China, advocating for the FCC's strong stance on China's telecoms companies.

In November 2022, he called for a total ban on the popular social media app TikTok in the US, citing the company's ties to the Chinese state.

He also criticized the Biden Administration's $100 billion proposal for new broadband deployment investment.

"Free speech warrior"

"Commission Carr is a warrior for free speech, and has fought against the regulatory lawfare that has stifled Americans' freedoms and held back our economy," Trump said.

"He will end the regulatory onslaught that has been crippling America's job creators and innovators, and ensure that the FCC delivers for rural America."

Carr has served as a Commissioner since 2017, previously serving under former FCC Chair Ajit Pai as an advisor, after he was nominated by Trump to the Commission.

He recently criticized NBC for allowing Vice President Kamala Harris to appear on Saturday Night Live, in the lead-up to the presidential election, citing her appearance was a "clear and blatant effort to evade the FCC's Equal Time rule." The rule sets out to avoid giving candidates more favorable airtime on the eve of the election.

“When the transition is complete, the FCC will have an important role to play reining in Big Tech, ensuring that broadcasters operate in the public interest, and unleashing economic growth while advancing our national security interests and supporting law enforcement. The FCC can and must deliver results for the American people," said Carr following Trump's presidential win.

The current Commission is made up of three Democrats; Chairwoman Rosenworcel, Geoffrey Starks, Anna M.Gomez, and two Republicans; Carr and Commission Nathan Simington.
