The Trump administration has announced the US Tech Force, a new program to speed up the deployment of artificial intelligence in the federal government.

Around 1,000 engineers, data scientists, and AI specialists are expected to be hired by the Office of Personnel Management for a period of two years starting March 31, 2026.

Tech Force fellows will spend their stint at federal agencies, including the Defense, Treasury, State, Labor, and Energy departments, as well as the Internal Revenue Service and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

They will work in partnership with corporate America, with private sector partners including Amazon Web Services, Apple, Anduril, Google, Dell, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, Coinbase, Robinhood, Oracle, Palantir, Salesforce, and Elon Musk's xAI. Those companies have pledged to consider hiring the workers after the two-year period.

“This is a clarion call,” OPM Director Scott Kupor said.

“If you want to help your country lead in the age of rapid technological advancement, we need you. Tech Force offers the chance to build and lead projects of national importance, while creating powerful career opportunities in both public service and the private sector. I am grateful to President Trump for prioritizing America’s technology leadership and empowering a cross-government effort to close our nation’s critical talent gaps.”

Back in 2014, then-President Barack Obama launched the United States Digital Service (USDS) as a technology unit tasked with improving the federal government's use of IT and reducing spending on legacy systems.

This January, USDS was renamed as the United States DOGE Service, with Elon Musk as its de facto head, and its original mission was abandoned. After enacting government-wide layoffs, which also eliminated the digital services agency 18F, DOGE itself was disbanded.
