Tech firm Sirti Digital Solutions has delivered a prefabricated data center Italy’s State Mint in just five weeks, financial newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore has reported.

It is understood to be the largest prefabricated data center in Italy.

The €28 million ($32.5m) project involved the construction of a facility over a total area of about 1,200 sqm (12,915 sq ft), housing 200 racks with a total IT capacity of 1.5MW and designed with 2N architecture.

The fully loaded PUE is less than or equal to 1.25.

The data center was built by a joint venture between air conditioning specialist HiRef and telco equipment supplier Smitt using a prefabricated modular system consisting of 44 modules assembled on site.

Il Sole 24 Ore said it was built with 100 percent recyclable materials and no concrete.

The facility was designed to be earthquake-proof through the integration of isolators developed with the Polytechnic University of Milan. It can also withstand severe weather conditions, including winds of over 200 kmph (124 mph).

Sirti Digital Solutions was also awarded a five-year operation and maintenance contract, Il Sole 24 Ore said.

According to reports by the newspaper, the Italian government will use the data center to run IO, a public services app used by Italy’s citizens to manage official documents and communications.

"This project represents an important step not only for HiRef, but for the entire digital infrastructure sector,” Nicola Rossi, HiRef’s Italy commercial and marketing director, said, as reported by Energia & Mercato.

“The challenge was not simply to build a large data center, but to construct a system capable of ensuring security, continuity, and sustainability in a highly critical environment.

“We have brought together the diverse skills within our group, integrating design, technology, and industrial capacity, with the goal of creating a benchmark infrastructure.”
