A 30 year-old man was found trapped in Bogotá, Colombia, this week while trying to steal a fiber optic cable.

The man was discovered early Tuesday morning beneath a TransMilenio station in the Teusaquillo area.

Blu Radio reports that the individual was attempting to steal 75 meters of fiber optic cable, as construction was underway at the subway station.

The man attempted to cut the cable, but after entering the hole beneath the station, he couldn't find his way out.

After being freed, he was then arrested after police discovered that he managed to cut and reel in 75 meters of fiber optic cable.

The unnamed man was then taken to the Attorney General's Office.

Disruption to telecom infrastructure has been a growing theme in Colombia. It has led the Bogotá Telecommunications Company (ETB) to display messages on their manholes stating that there are no copper cables.

Unlike copper, which has a high street value when sold for scrap, fiber does not have much of a material value.

Last month, five people were caught in Colombia with 399 meters of cable, valued at more than 16 million pesos ($4,000).
