TGS, a subsurface data and energy intelligence provider, has contracted Tape Ark to assist with a massive cloud migration effort.

Under the agreement, Tape Ark will be migrating around 40 petabytes of seismic and subsurface data into a cloud environment for TGS.

The migration will enable TGS to have on-demand access to its archive, and use scalable high-performance computing for imaging and advanced analytics.

“With ongoing investment in modernizing our data and technology platform, this migration is a key step in how we continue to evolve TGS’ data and technology platform,” said Wadii El Karkouri, executive vice president of Imaging & Technology at TGS. “It enables greater speed, scale, and flexibility in how our customers access and use subsurface data.”

The migration will use Tape Ark's ingest platform, which supports parallel, high-throughput processing across multiple facilities.

While the data will be moved to a hyperscale cloud platform, which cloud platform has not been stated. Tape Ark counts AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Backblaze, and Wasabi, among its partners.

Tape Ark has previously assisted with the UK's Met Office's migration to Microsoft Azure, the West Australian Ballet archives to an undisclosed platform, and the migration of a large collection of tape-based sports video footage to Google Cloud for an undisclosed broadcaster.
