Transport for London (TfL) and Boldyn Network have confirmed that 4G mobile coverage is now available across the entire Elizabeth Line, including between tunnels.

The rollout of mobile coverage across the Elizabeth Line, a new train line running through central London, follows the rollout of 4G to a number of stations earlier this year, including Paddington, Canary Wharf, Whitechapel, and Woolwich.

In an update this week, TfL and Boldyn confirmed that work has been completed to deliver coverage to the remaining tunnels for passengers traveling across Central London.

Connectivity has been supported by neutral host provider Boldyn Networks, formerly BAI Communications.

The company was awarded a 20-year concession by TfL in June 2021 to provide high-speed, 5G-ready mobile coverage across the entire London Underground network.

All four UK operators, Vodafone, Virgin Media O2, BT (EE), and Three have provided their own network coverage on top of the network hosted by Boldyn.

"Bringing mobile coverage to the Underground network is a key commitment of mine, so I'm delighted that the entire Elizabeth line network now has 4G connectivity," said the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.

Beyond the Elizabeth Line, nicknamed the 'Lizzie Line' by locals, TfL and Boldyn plan to introduce high-speed 4G and 5G mobile coverage across the whole London Underound, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), and Elizabeth line network, including on the London Overground Windrush line between Highbury & Islington and New Cross.

EE went live with its 5G network in parts of the London Underground in February last year, EE owner BT's Wholesale unit is providing data center space to support Boldyn.

"Delivering seamless, high-speed connectivity across London's transport network is transformational for both passengers and operational teams, and we are delighted to be playing a fundamental role in making this happen," said Igor Leprince, Group CEO at Boldyn Networks.

"This milestone reflects our shared commitment with TfL to enhancing the travel experience with reliable and high-quality connectivity across the city, connecting the places that matter. We look forward to continuing the rollout at pace and delivering the exceptional service Londoners increasingly rely on."

Work to connect the Underground with mobile coverage has been carried out by hundreds of workers, working overnight hours across the Tube network to install mobile equipment, confirmed TfL and Boldyn.

Once fully delivered, more than 2,000 kilometers of cabling, plus thousands of radios are expected to be installed within tunnels and stations, all of which will be fitted outside of operational hours.
