South African data center firm Teraco has completed an expansion at one of its Cape Town data center campuses and started work on another.

Teraco completes CT2 expansion

The Digital Realty-owned company this week announced the completion of the expansion of its CT2 facility in the Brackenfell area of Cape Town, bringing the facility’s total critical IT load to 50MW.

“CT2’s expansion underscores our continued commitment to meeting the demand for large, hyperscale infrastructure in Africa,” said Jan Hnizdo, Teraco's CEO. “This facility expands Platform Teraco by providing clients with the ability to scale on demand, proven resilience, an extensive interconnected ecosystem, and a broad array of low-latency connectivity options.”

Plans for CT2 Phase II were announced in November 2023. Teraco completed the first phase of CT2 at the Brackenfell campus in 2021. The first phase comprised 25,000 sqm (269,000 sq ft) of building structure, 8,000 sqm (86,100 sq ft) of data hall space, and 18MW of capacity.

Teraco to expand original Cape Town facility

This week also saw the commencement of an expansion to our CT1 data center in the Rondebosch area of Cape Town.

The site currently offers 3MW across 2,500 sqm. The project will add 1,000 sqm of new data halls and 2MW of critical IT load, growing CT1’s total capacity to 5MW. The expansion will be completed by early 2027.

“This investment at CT1 reflects our continued confidence in Cape Town as one of Africa’s most digitally connected cities,” said Hnizdo. “CT1 has always held a special place in Teraco’s story – it is where our journey began in 2008. By expanding CT1, we are not only working to meet growing client demand for interconnection and deployment capacity, but also strengthening our long-term commitment to the region’s digital future.”

Teraco’s original facility, CT1, is located within the Great Westerford building. Teraco acquired the building in 2023.

Founded in 2008, Digital Realty acquired a majority stake in Teraco in January 2022, in a deal valuing the company at approximately $3.5 billion.

At full expansion, Teraco’s total capacity across its portfolio is set to reach 191MW. This includes the Isando Campus (JB1/JB3/JB5: 70MW), Bredell Campus (JB2/JB4: 64MW), Cape Town Campus (CT1/CT2: 55MW), and Durban (DB1: 2MW).
