Australian carrier Telstra has snapped up MVNO Boost Mobile for a reported AU$145 million (US$94.1m).

The deal was confirmed by Boost Mobile founder Peter Adderton via a post on LinkedIn on December 2.

Founded in 2000, Boost has been a Telstra MVNO wholesale customer since 2012 and is the only MVNO with access to Telstra's entire mobile network, which covers 99.4 percent of the country.

Adderton said the deal will enable him to focus on his latest venture, MobileX, a carrier that leverages AI to create custom plans for users.

“Ever since I founded the Boost mobile Brand I wanted to build the first global Mobile Brand, I never was able to fully achieve that dream of giving consumers all over the world a choice and a voice with the Boost brand," he said.

"With today’s announcement of the sale of the Boost Mobile brand in Australia to Telstra I can now focus 100 percent of my energy on finishing that dream with the MobileX global brand. Boost has given me an incredible 20-plus years of Fun, adventure, many highs and some lows, but in the end I hope our Boost customers knew we got up every day and fought for them that fight will continue for me and the whole team at MobileX, and I will finish the dream of building that global brand."

Earlier this year, Adderton said that Boost has close to one million prepaid mobile subscribers.

"Boost Mobile has been a fantastic partner of Telstra for 13 years and this acquisition cements just how much we value the Boost brand,” said Brad Whitcomb, the group executive for Telstra Consumer.

“We know Boost-branded products are a fantastic option for those seeking more affordable mobile connectivity and we are committed to providing that choice in the market."

Telstra is Australia's largest mobile network operator, with 22.5 mobile customers, and commands a 43 percent market share in the country.

The deal is expected to be completed later this month.
