US provider of IT and managed services TekLinks has launched a new data center in the Birmingham, Alabama, region. The facility triples the company's footprint in the area, where it previously had only one data center.

The new data center in the City of Homewood is housed in a 20,000-sq-ft building, about half of which is occupied by data center space. The Birmingham-based company says the facility was built to support high-density equipment racks.

Don Monistere, VP of sales at TekLinks, said in a statement the decision to expand in Alabama came as a result of demand from existing customers.

"We began this project due to high customer demand from our enterprise and mid-enterprise customers across our geographic footprint," he said. "This facility will allow us to host continue serving the needs of our current and future customers and is a key component of our continued growth strategy."

In addition to the two Alabama facilities, TekLinks also operates a data center in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
