T-Mobile has launched a solar plant at its largest data center in Prague, Czech Republic.

The company completed the installation of the solar project across the rooftops and surrounding areas of its DC7 data center campus. According to the company, the array will generate up to 240MWh of power per year and play a crucial role in reducing the data center's carbon footprint.

“The newly installed photovoltaic power plant uses the data center's roof and adjacent areas to maximize energy efficiency. “In the first phase, we are counting on an output of 230kWp, which can produce approximately 240MWh of electricity per year,” said Zdeněk Klímek, an expert in data center operations at T-Mobile.

T-Mobile broke ground on the project in 2017, with the data center initially expected to offer 3,000 sqm (32,291 sq ft) of white space. The company expanded the data center last September, adding four new data halls, offering 1,400 sqm (15,070 sq ft) of IT space across a total area of 3,500 sqm (37,675 sq ft). Following the expansion, the data center now has a capacity of 8MW, 6MW of which is intended for IT infrastructure.

“DC7 is the flagship of our data centers, and its operation was designed from the beginning to be as energy efficient as possible. The installation of the photovoltaic power plant is another step towards increasing the sustainability of our operation, and at the same time represents a significant investment in the future of the Czech technological environment,” says Michal Koláček, manager of data centers and cloud solutions at T-Mobile.

Existing clients at the facility reportedly include Bank iD, the Czech Land Survey and Cadastral Office, Raiffeisenbank, and the Czech Export Bank. In addition to three data centers in Prague, the operator also has facilities in Brno and Ostrava in the Czech Republic.
