The company has acquired Philip Morris Products SA’s Bonvillars facility in Yverdon-les-Bains.

Swisscom said the new facility will enable it to meet the demand for colocation services and offer businesses an additional option for their IT needs.

Specifications of the data center have not been shared, however, the facility is 100 percent powered by renewable energy and uses free cooling.

“It has become apparent to Swisscom that, besides moving operations to the cloud, companies also want to keep some of their IT in Switzerland for resilience reasons. Colocation services are the ideal solution for this,” said Swisscom.

Thomas Wettstein, head of IT solutions at Swisscom, added; “The Bonvillars data center will enable us to offer our customers even more flexibility and security for their data in Western Switzerland. We look forward to expanding our capacities and being a trusted partner for ICT solutions.”

Swisscom has eight data centers across Switzerland, including Basel-Grosspeter, Bellinzona-Pellandini, Bern-Wankdorf, Geneva-Montbrillant, Lausanne-Savoie, Lugano-Cinque Vie, Zurich-Herdern, Zurich-Enge.

The company is currently in the process of acquiring Vodafone Italy for €8 billion ($8.43bn).

Last month, the company launched a Nvidia SuperPOD AI platform.
