Under the terms of the deal, Sunrun will supply energy capacity from a portion of its thousands of residential storage-plus-solar systems in PJM and MISO grid regions.

“Meeting growing energy demand requires us to maximize every single electron available across the country,” said Sunrun CEO Mary Powell. “In collaboration with Voltus, we are providing critical capacity from home batteries supported by funding from hyperscalers. This is just the beginning of what distributed energy assets can achieve.”

Voltus launched its BYOC program in October last year. The program is designed to accelerate data center development by leveraging existing grid flexibility. It achieves this by offering developers an alternative pathway to interconnection, using its VPP platform to deliver market-accredited capacity.

Voltage claims that, through this model, data center developers can bring their own capacity stack to utilities, enabling approvals and build-outs years ahead of schedule. Since its launch, the company has signed a 100MW BYOC agreement with Google to support the company’s operations across the PJM grid. It also partnered with Octopus Energy US to build flexible capacity portfolios for data center firms under the BYOC framework.

“BYOC is about turning distributed resources into capacity the grid can count on, and maximizing value for the end user,” said Dana Guernsey, CEO of Voltus. “This partnership brings together Sunrun’s residential scale with Voltus’s market-integrated flexibility platform so distributed capacity can support reliability, affordability, and growth as electricity demand increases.”

The agreement is the second deal between Voltus and Sunrun. In June, the companies, alongside Tesla, signed a deal to aggregate more than 16GW of residential energy capacity across the US for sale to hyperscalers and utilities. The deal will see the firms draw on home battery systems, smart thermostats, and vehicle-to-grid devices already installed across the grid.

Voltus is a distributed energy and VPP platform that operates across the US. It connects distributed energy resources (DERs) to all nine wholesale markets in North America, with more than 7.5GW of DERs in operation.

Established in 2007, Sunrun is the US’ biggest provider of photovoltaic systems and battery energy storage products, primarily for residential customers.
