Spanish data center firm Templus has acquired Spanish colo bitNAP from Cellnex.
The acquisition includes bitNAP’s only data center facility in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona. The facility offers 1.7MW of power across 3,000 sqm (32,291 sq ft), with a PUE of 1.14.
Other details of the transaction are not known.
“This acquisition not only expands our market presence but also underlines our dedication to providing cutting-edge technological solutions. Barcelona represents a significant step in our growth strategy and will allow us to enhance our service offering and respond more effectively to our customers’ needs,” said Nacho Velilla, CEO at Templus.
Cellnex acquired bitNAP in 2022 to support the telecommunications infrastructure required for the deployment of 5G in Spain.
Templus launched last year after ICG and Teras Capital acquired the data center business of Spanish telco Avatel. The Avatel portfolio, along with a data center acquired from Mapfe, make up Templus’ current data center network.
The company currently operates 20 facilities across Spain, mainly in Madrid, Malaga, and Seville. The company is also targeting facilities in Valencia, Zaragoza, and San Sebastián.
Barcelona is home to the likes of EdgeConneX, Edged, Equinix, AtlasEdge, and Nabiax. The 2Africa and MedLoop cables also land in the city, with the Medusa cable expected to land later this year.
Cellnex currently manages a portfolio of more than 138,000 tower sites – including planned roll-outs up to 2030 – in 12 European countries.
The company also operates three other data center sites in Spain and 24 high telecom & data towers throughout the Netherlands - plus a larger Dutch data center at the media park in Hilversum.
In France, Cellnex operates more than 100 Edge data centers across France operated through its NexLoop unit, which was founded in 2020. The company was previously reported as exploring a sale of its French data center portfolio.
