North American renewable developer SolarBank has announced an expansion into the data center sector.
The company will seek opportunities as a developer, owner, and strategic partner in data center infrastructure to meet the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions within the sector.
SolarBank is currently exploring potential partnerships and ownership opportunities with prominent market players. It aims to leverage these partnerships in conjunction with its own renewable development capabilities to support the delivery of energy-efficient, carbon-reducing data center solutions.
"Expanding into the data center business aligns with our vision of creating a resilient and sustainable energy grid," said Richard Lu, CEO of SolarBank.
The company has a development pipeline of 1GW and has successfully developed 100MW of operational renewable capacity. It hopes to leverage this expertise to enable it “to deliver energy-efficient, carbon-reducing data centers to support today's data needs and tomorrow's technological advancements,” Lu continued.
SolarBank currently does not have any data center projects under development or that it has secured rights to. It is in discussions with various other parties regarding potential data center opportunities and will provide details in a future news release.
SolarBank has announced several solar projects in 2024. Earlier this week, plans were revealed to develop a 3.1MW ground-mount solar power project in Nova Scotia.
The month prior, it announced plans to develop a 7.2MW solar project in Wyoming County, New York.
In total, the company has announced plans to develop 12 solar projects across North America in 2024.
