Seagate Technology has announced the general availability of two 30TB hard disk drives (HDDs), the Exos M and IronWolf Pro.

The products represent the first time Seagate has made HDDs based on its heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology, Mozaic 3+, available to the mass market, the company said, having previously only shipped the products to a select number of pre-qualified hyperscale customers.

The Mozaic HAMR technology uses a medium that can be magnetized in much smaller domains than conventional vertical recording media, but which has to be heated to become writable. This means that Seagate has had to develop HDD read-write heads with tiny lasers that can heat the platter precisely where bits are to be written.

Built to meet increased demand for high-capacity, energy-efficient storage, the Seagate Exos M 30TB drive supports real-time Edge analytics for large-scale deployments in AI-optimized cloud and enterprise environments, while Seagate’s IronWolf Pro 30TB drives have been designed for use in NAS (Network Attached Storage) systems within commercial and enterprise environments, supporting local AI applications.

The drives feature 3TB platters offering a maximum transfer rate of 275Mbps, an increase of 5Mbps when compared to Seagate’s previous generation of HDDs, and consume a maximum of 9.5W. Seagate has previously said its innovation roadmap includes a pathway to increasing per-platter capacity to 10TB.

“Today, approximately 90 percent of the world’s data is stored in just 10 countries. However, data gravity is increasingly pulling networks to the Edge as nearly 150 countries adopt data sovereignty requirements, and AI workloads continue to expand,” said Melyssa Banda, SVP of Edge storage and services, Seagate.

“Data centers—on-prem, private, and sovereign—are leveraging AI to unlock the value of their proprietary data. Our 30TB drives are designed to support these rapidly growing trends, delivering the capacity, efficiency, and resilience needed to power the AI workloads.”

The 30TB and 28TB versions of Seagate’s Exos M and IronWolf Pro HDDs are now available to customers globally. Both the Exos M 30TB and IronWolf Pro 30TB models are priced at $599.99, while the 28TB variants of each drive cost $569.99.
