Canadian telco Rogers Communications has deployed Ericsson's 5G Advanced technology across its national network.
In doing so, the carrier claims to be the first Canadian operator to offer 5G Advanced.
The technology requites operators to have a 5G core network and be able to offer 5G standalone (SA) services. Most networks initially launched 5G as non-standalone, meaning those networks were still reliant on a 4G core.
“5G Advanced will help unlock the full potential of 5G for businesses and consumers,” said Mark Kennedy, chief technology officer for Rogers. “We continue to invest in Canada’s largest 5G network and are proud to be the first in Canada to bring 5G Advanced technology to our customers.”
Rogers noted that it has deployed Ericsson's 5G Advanced RedCap software to support next-generation IoT.
RedCap, short for reduced capability, is able to support IoT devices, such as sensors, cameras, and monitoring equipment more efficiently.
The latest deployment extends Rogers' long-term partnership with Ericsson. The carrier has worked with the Swedish vendor from 1G through to the current 5G generation.

In the past decade, Rogers claims to have invested more than CA$40 billion ($29bn) in its networks. The company launched its 5G network in 2020 and has since expanded its 5G network to more than 2,500 communities.
Earlier this year, Rogers agreed to an equity deal with Blackstone worth CA$7 billion (US$5.12bn). As part of the agreement, Blackstone will acquire a non-controlling interest in a new Canadian subsidiary of Rogers that will own a minor part of Rogers' wireless network.
