A new data center campus proposed outside Detroit, Michigan, has seen its zoning request delayed by local officials.

MLive and others report that Related Digital is proposing to develop a 2.2 million sq ft (204,385 sqm) campus in Saline Township, Washtenaw County.

The Saline Township planning commission met last week to discuss the proposal to rezone 575 acres north of US-12 and east of Braun Road from agricultural to I-1 Industrial. The township board discussed the proposal this week.

The project will reportedly comprise up to five buildings. According to Brent Behrman, CEO of Related Digital, the five will include three spanning 540,000 sq ft (50,167 sqm) each and one 80,000 sq ft (7,432 sqm) building. The site will also include a 100,000 sq ft (9,290 sqm) warehouse and a small administrative office building.

After more than two hours of comments from the public, the planning commission voted 6-1 to table the request, saying they did not have enough information to go ahead with a vote. After a three-hour meeting this week, the Saline Township board voted unanimously to table a vote until its next board meeting on September 10.

Saline township, located outside Saline city, is located some 45 miles west of downtown Detroit.

Founded in 1972, privately-owned Related Companies has more than $70 billion in assets owned or under development. Its investments include mixed-use, residential, retail, office, and hospitality developments. The company launched its data center arm, Related Digital, earlier this year.

As well as a 64MW project in Ontario, Canada, the company said its pipeline includes a 1GW 400-acre campus in Chicago, Illinois; a 500-acre, 1GW campus in Illinois; a 600-acre, 1.2GW site in Missouri; and a 115-acre, 250MW campus in Wyoming.

Operators around Detroit include EdgeConneX, US Signal, Cogent, 365, Lumen, Verizon, and several local providers.

Thor Equities is seeking to develop an 800-acre campus in Washtenaw County’s Augusta Township, and has faced pushback from local officials.
