Chinese social media giant RedNote could build a 600MW data center campus in Inner Mongolia, according to a report by the South China Morning Post.
An individual familiar with the project said that the data center would either be built in or near the city of Ulanqab, with a budget of around 15 billion yuan ($2.2bn) excluding semiconductor costs.
RedNote was reportedly in talks with Chinese data center operator Vnet, which operated around 783MW of data center capacity as of September 2025.
Bloomberg reported last week that DeepSeek was also planning to develop a data center in Ulanqab, China. A source familiar with the Chinese AI champion’s plans said that this campus would offer 1GW of capacity and come partially online by the end of 2027 or the start of 2028.
Inner Mongolia is one of the provinces mentioned in the country’s Eastern Data, Western Compute project, which seeks to place large-scale compute infrastructure in China’s western regions.
RedNote, otherwise known as Xiaohongshu, is a Chinese social media platform similar to Pinterest and Instagram. The app rose to prominence in the US towards the end of 2024 and the start of 2025 amid fears that TikTok would be banned by the US government – which occurred for about a week in January 2025 – if its parent company ByteDance would not sell the app to American buyers.
Fellow Chinese AI champion Z.ai is reportedly partially operating a 1GW data center using Chinese-made chips, but details about the data center’s location, current operational capacity, as well as the identity of the chipmaker, were not disclosed.
