DuPont Fabros data center in Elk Grove Village, Ill., where Rackspace now leases about 65,000 square feet of raised floor

Equinix and Rackspace both announced expansion of US data centers Thursday.

Equinix completed the third build-out phase of one of its New York facilities, adding 1,250 cabinet equivalents, and Rackspace leased an additional 28,200 square feet of space at a DuPont Fabros building in the Chicago area, where the company already occupies about 37,000 square feet.

According to a Rackspace news release, the company decided to expand in Elk Grove Village, Ill. (a Chicago suburb), in response to growing demand for cloud and managed hosting services. Rackspace also leases space at another DuPont Fabros facility, located in Ashburn, Va.

Equinix's business is colocation and interconnection and the company's North America President Pete Ferris attributed growth in New York mainly to the financial vertical.

"The demand for our data center services in this metropolitan area, particularly in the financial sector, has increased significantly over the last few quarters," Ferris said in a statement.

"New York is not only the hub of the North American financial market, but is an important component of the world's financial ecosystem."

Equinix did not specify the square footage and power capacity it added in New York to accommodate new clients.

Rackspace's said it will add about 4.3 MW of critical load in Chicago, bringing its total power capacity at the facility to slightly less than 10 MW.

The Equinix announcement comes one day after the Silicon Valley-based company announced opening of a new data center in Zurich.
