A proposal has been made for a data center near Kalamazoo, Michigan.

The facility would be located on a plot of land near the intersection between South 26th Street and East N Avenue in Pavilion Township, which is southeast from the city of Kalamazoo.

The proposal is in its early stages, and etails about the size and exact location were not shared.

Minutes from the August 21 meeting of the Pavilion Township Planning Commission show a discussion item concerning the addition of the term “data center” as a Special Exception use under the Zone I-2 designation, which marks a land for heavy industrial use.

It is unclear when the addition will be voted on.

The addition was suggested by real estate firm Franklin Partners, which is the landowner. The company has been looking for ways to use the property for three years.

Several residents told WWMT that they were concerned about rising electricity and water bills and contamination of the water supply.

Local utility Consumers Energy also sent WWMT a statement about the development proposal:

“At this time, we’re not able to disclose the counterparty of the agreement or the location of the site, but we will keep you updated as the process continues to move forward.

“Consumers Energy stands ready to provide reliable and affordable energy to all business and residential customers, including new economic development prospects and future industrial growth across our service territory. We are confident our long-term energy supply plan can responsibly meet the energy needs of our growing state.”

The area around Kalamazoo is not home to a great deal of data centers. Most of Michigan’s data centers are located around Detroit, with smaller markets in Lansing and Grand Rapids.
