Energy equipment manufacturer GE Vernova has announced a new medium-voltage Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system for the data center market.
The new UPS system, known as MV-UPS, differs from traditional UPS protection systems, which are typically applied at low voltage after electricity has been stepped down, by operating at medium voltage.
According to GE, the medium-voltage system creates a stability block between the facility and its power supply, allowing it to protect a much larger portion of the facility while preventing sudden changes in electricity demand from being passed directly back to the grid or generation sources.
The system is designed to sit on a facility's medium-voltage network between the power supply and critical loads. It pairs power-conversion technology and controls with integrated energy storage to hold voltage and frequency steady for critical operations, while buffering sudden swings in facility demand before they reach the grid or onsite generation.
GE claims the system is ideally suited for the AI data center market, as it is able to smooth out power demand swings synonymous with AI workloads, while also helping simplify downstream electrical infrastructure.
"Reliable, uninterrupted power is foundational to every energy-intensive industry, and AI data centers are raising that requirement to a new level of scale and complexity," said Philippe Piron, CEO of GE Vernova's Electrification segment. He said the product applies the company's existing power-conversion and energy-storage technology "in a new innovative way," aiming to deliver reliability alongside cost and footprint efficiency.
GE Vernova expects to begin shipping MV-UPS systems in mid-2027, with the first project energized in late 2027.
The MV-UPS extends GE Vernova's data center offering, which already includes gas turbines, substations, transformers, switchgear, and energy management systems. IT has signed several deals with major data center customers to supply them with power systems. For example, last March the firm signed a deal with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide power equipment for four of its data centers.
